This is a moment of reflection after the crowds and noise of the day disperse. The figure basks in the warm fading light of the setting sun, humming Brubeck’s 5/4 beat to herself. Inspired by Emerson’s “Great wo/man is s/he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.”

American Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck  album “Time Out” was in the playlist during the creation of the clay. The music “Take Five” is in 5/4 time signature which like the figure is uncommon and striking.

TAKE FIVE was honored by a member from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra during a 2020 juried exposition.

TAKE FIVE

When throngs recede and the sea breezes wane,
Mosaics footprints and driftwood remain,
Mortared by granite ground into quartz grain,
Suffused with sea foam, an ocean’s champagne.

When time changes and the seagulls retreat,
One sun bather basks solo in the heat,
Azur blue rondo glints under her feet,
She takes five and hums to a 5/4 jazz beat.
